CALL ME TONIGHT

It seems unknown as to who produced this, or at least MyAnimeList has no idea. Please contact me if you have any information about this OVA (and of course, consider adding anything missing to the MAL entry as well)—I'm actually really interested to learn more!

DESCRIPTION

Call Me Tonight (jp. CallMeトゥナイト) is an adult horror-comedy OVA released in 1986. The OVA only has one episode lasting about a half-hour.

The OVA seems obscure, though well known by the people who are aware of its existence. The character Oyuki has appeared in memes about character designs in the 1980's, however I very rarely run into anything about the animation in the wild.

PLOT

Our two main characters are Natsumi Rumi and Sugiura Ryo. Rumi is a young sex hotline operator, and Ryo is a young man of ambiguous age who feels he has nowhere else to turn. He admits to Rumi on the phone that he's afraid of sex due to something horrible happening every time he gets aroused, and, intrigued by his condition, Rumi agrees to see him in person.

As their little 'date' continues, Rumi learns what he meant—any time he gets aroused or even thinks about anything perverted, he turns into a horrible monster that destroys everything in its path. Finding herself falling for him, she decides she wants to help cure him of his condition, rather than avoid him forever.

Unfortunately, a yakuza woman named Nohara Maki witnessed Ryo's transformation, and now her sister Oyuki wants to know more about him... carnally.

PACING, AND OTHER THINGS TO FORGET

Due to the short runtime of the animation, the plot can sometimes feel quiet rushed. I personally never thought this really took away from the story, though—you'll just have a couple moments where you have to go 'What just happened???'.

If I recall correctly, Rumi is about 14, which makes her being a sex hotline operator a little concerning. Of course that's obvious to anyone with a brain, but if you don't watch this kind of content usually, keep that bit out of your head for a little as the OVA continues. In fact, I'm pretty sure all of the characters in this who end up performing some sort of sexual something or another are underage. Luckily, this never makes it past the ecchi mark in terms of pornography.

SOUNDTRACK

The full release of Call Me Tonight included its soundtrack, which was part of a series called Pink Noise. The songs are sung by Natsumi Rumi (not to be mistaken for the protagonist) and Watanabe Hiroyuki. The songs are mostly similar to city pop and funk, however they almost remind me of the Minneapolis sound that Prince and his cohorts were known for.

The album originally came with an illustrated insert, as well as an insert with the lyrics and information about the singer. I do not recall if all of the songs were used in the OVA or not.
